~ for May
Walking along Sunset Beach,
The direction hardly matters.
The endless sand stretches
North to Alaska, south to Argentina.
Cypresses and Sequoias guard the coast
As children shout in unaccustomed joy
In a rare outing at the beach.
Footprints and dog tracks travel side-by-side
As an English Setter protects a family
And a Shih Tzu keeps an old man company.
Northern Harriers and Kingfishers fly low
Over the surf to compete with a fisherman
Who has cast his lure into the waves.
The low tide recedes to reveal two rocks
Pounded smooth by the waves.
I look to the east
And think of you.
